At this time of year we can enjoy seeing the tinted autumn leaves even in the Metropolitan area, but this year they are slow in coming because of the mild climate. On the other hand, we notice that the shops on the streets are starting to be decorated with Christmas ornaments; it seems to be occurring earlier than usual. In Japan when December comes, the sales battle during Christmas and New Year's creates a jumbled atmosphere in every department store and downtown becomes crowded and lively. A lot of New Year's decorations are traditional Japanese style contrary to the Christmas decorations of the West. It is said that this custom is an attempt to combine seem Western and Japanese styles. People from overseas who observe this setting may feel that this is strange. However, Japanese people would agree with that assessment.
