******************************************************************** "Treasure Box" - Discovery of Japan <Vol.54> ******************************************************************** Date: December 10, 2004 <Circulation:1892> Have you been preparing Nengajo (= New Year's card)? I've not even bought cards yet, which makes me rush. As we introduced before, there are twelve horary signs called "Eto" in Japan, and next year is the Year of the Cock. In Japan, we have a custom to decorate an entrance hall and a living room with an ornament of the year's eto, which was started from Edo era. The reason why we put the ornament is that the animals were believed to be mysterious creatures and "Eto" symbolizes the god of the year. Therefore, we are supposed to display the ornament of a cock next year and a cock has been believed to bring luck of money. The festival called Tori-no-ichi is held at shrines every November. Since the word "tori" is a homonym, it has a meaning of "get" as well as a cook. Therefore, Tori-no-ichi is always crowded with many people who wish good fortune and rush of business. Furthermore, we can see various kinds of kumade(rake), which is supposed to scrape the fortune together, being sold at the Tori-no-ichi. A Kumade is decorated with lots of lucky goods such as a crane, tortoise, pine, bamboo, ume (Japanese apricot), straw rice-bag, Japanese oval gold coin, etc. You can buy smaller Kumade with 1,500-yen, but if you hand additional 1000-yen to the shop as a tip, the shop owner gives you a ceremonial hand-clapping in spirited manner. When you walk on the approach of the shrine surrounded by the lights of lantern, displayed gorgeous kumade and hand- clapping at Tori-no-ichi, you may touch unique and lively feeling. <Japanese> 皆さん、年賀状の準備は進んでいますか？ 私はまだハガキすら買っておらず、焦っております(汗；) 来年は酉年。日本では江戸時代からその年の干支にちなんだ 動物の置物を玄関や居間に飾る風習があります。 それは動物には神秘的な力が宿り、干支はその年の神様であると 信じられてきたことに由来しているんですね。 というわけで、来年は鶏の置物が飾られるのですが、その鶏は 金運にかかわる動物として親しまれてきました。 毎年１１月に日本各地の大鳥神社で行われる酉の市は、 「酉」＝「取る」と結びつけ、福を取り寄せる、商売繁盛等に 繋がるとされ、多くの参詣者で賑わいます。 酉の市では客をかきこむという縁起物の熊手が売られています。 熊手には鶴亀、松竹梅、米俵や小判など縁起ものが片っ端から あしらわれています。小さいもので１５００円ほど、これに ご祝儀として１０００円くらいを出すと、お店のおじさんが 威勢良く手締めをしてくれます。 提灯の灯り、所狭しと飾られている豪華な熊手、手締めの 掛け声等々、深夜まで賑わう酉の市は粋で独特な日本の 風景のひとつです。 では、今週は簡単英会話です。 {magclick} ==================================================================== + CONVERSATION + http://www.jpn-miyabi.com/Vol.28/conversation28.html John: Emi, which conference room we're gonna use from 2 p.m.? By the way, which meeting room is it? **NOTE Japanese companies usually pay bonuses twice a year, one in June and the other in December. <Japanese> John: エミ、２時からの会議ってどこの部屋だっけ？ おや？ 何かいいことでもあった？ 嬉しそうだね。 Emi: だって、ボーナス出たじゃない。 John: あぁ、そっか。 ボーナスアップした？ Emi: 悪くなかったわ。 John: それはよかった。頑張ってたもんなぁ。 エミの企画した新規プロジェクトも上手くいってるしね。 当然の評価だよ。 Emi: ジョンにも色々アドバイスもらったお陰よ。 なんとか順調に行って安心したわ。 ホント、いつも感謝してます。 John: エミの実力だよ。 Emi: それにしても、景気は上向きって言うけどいまひとつよね。 業界によっても違うんでしょうけど。 John: あぁ、僕の友人なんて、冬のボーナスは３０％カットだって 嘆いてたよ。 Emi: それは気の毒ね・・。 気を抜かないで頑張らなくちゃね。 John: これからもその調子で頑張って。 Emi: 今も色々アイディアがあるの。企画書作ったら 見てみてくれない？ John: すごいね、楽しみにしてるよ。 で、どの会議室だっけ？ -------------------- conference: 会議 gonna: = going to 会話ではgonnaをよく使いますが、書き言葉では going toの方が標準的です。 What happened to you?: 「何かあった？」「どうしたの？」 Did you get a raise in bonus?: 「ボーナスアップした？」 Not bad.: 悪くない go well: 上手くいく = go all right everything goes well → 全てうまくいく You deserve a good appreciation.: deserveは“〜を受けるに足る”、 appreciationは“評価、真価を認めること”という意味から ここでは「当然の評価だよ」と訳しています。 feel relieved: 安心する、ほっとする thanks to: 〜のお陰で That's your own effort.: 「君の（あなたの）実力です。」 picking up: 景気が回復する vary: 異なる、相違する depending on: （事が）〜による、〜次第である industry: 産業 sigh over: 〜にため息をつく misfortune: 不運 concentrate on: 〜に全力を注ぐ、専念する keep it up: 「頑張れ！」「その調子！」 Keep going!, Keep at it!も使えます。 日本人は励ましたり、はっぱをかけたりする時に「頑張れ」と言いますが、 英米人はどちらかというと、"Take it easy."「気楽にやれよ」と言って 励まします。また、状況によっては"Good luck!"も使えます。 【関連表現】「弱音を吐くな」"Never say die!" 「諦めるな」"Never give up!" look over: 〜にざっと目を通す the planning paer: 企画書 looki forward to 〜ing: 〜を（楽しみに）待つ Gee!: 「おや！」「これは！」 驚きや喜びを表す言葉で、Jesus（キリスト）を短縮したもの。 "Jesus!"とも言います。 =================================================================== 【編集後記】 さて、今週の英会話はいかがでしたか？ なるべく日常にあるシチュエーションを想定して、実用的な英会話をお届け できるよう、心がけているのですが、恋人同士の会話では気付かないうちに 個人的願望も入ってたりすることもあるかもしれません（笑） いよいよ１２月も半ばというわけで、街ではクリスマスらしいＢＧＭや 飾りつけで賑わってきましたね。 忘年会シーズンでもあり、遅い時間に電車に乗っても通勤ラッシュ並に 混雑してるんですよね。 電車といえば、今話題の「電車男」、もう読まれましたか？ 真実か否かは誰にも分からないという意見もあるようですが 一度サイトを訪ねて見てみたところ、臨場感あり、面白かったです。 では、また来週〜 Have a nice weekend!
