We are so glad to see you again! How did you spend New Year's holiday? Today, in Japan, we have a custom of eating congee with seven herbs called "Nanakusagayu" in the morning of January 7th. Nowadays we have been lived on rice but polished rice was so precious in old days that people could eat white rice only on a special occasion such as a festival. Therefore, new rice was offered before the altar at first, then people accepted it gratefully after parying for rich harvest. The eating habit of congee with seven herbs has formed under such a circumstance. It is said that this practice originated basically from China and people of those days poured gratitude to a god and delight of greeting the New Year and praying for the healthy of the year into it. On the other hand, it is said that these fresh greens and herbs make an exhausted stomach recover after the New Year's banquet. I realized that ancient people take the reasonable practice naturally without making scientific analysis. Every year-end, one word in kanji that symbolizes the year is announced from one of Japanese historic temples named "Kiyomizudera" located in Kyoto. The word of last year was "wazawai" which means a disaster. I hope that the word represent delight and good will be selected at the end of this year. Please click here! http://www.jpn-miyabi.com <Japanese> あけましておめでとうございます。 今年も皆さんに会えて嬉しいで〜す。 どんなお正月を過ごされましたか？ 今日は１月７日。この日、日本では七草粥といって七種の若菜を 入れたお粥を食べる風習があります。今でこそ私達は白米を常食 としていますが、昔は白米と言えば大変貴重なもので、庶民は祭 礼などの特別な日にしか食せないものでした。 よって、新米はまず神前に供え、五穀豊穣をお祈りした後に頂い たのでした。 そんな中から生まれたのが七草粥の風習です。 もとは中国から伝わったと言われており、神への感謝と無事に新 年を迎えられたことの慶び、１年間無病息災で過ごせるようにと の祈りが込められています。 一方、お正月を祝うご馳走が続いて胃袋も疲れてくるこの頃、薬 効がある七草を食べることによって疲れた臓器が癒されるとも言 われています。昔の人は科学的な分析なしでも理にかなった風習 を自然に取り入れていたのですね。 毎年清水寺ではその年を象徴する文字（漢字１字）が発表されます。 昨年は「災」でしたが今年は喜びや福を表す文字になるよう、良い １年になるといいですね。 さて、"Treasure Box Gallery"では日本の四季折々の風景を アップしました。見てみて下さ-い。 → http://www.jpn-miyabi.com では、本年もどうぞ宜しくお願いしますm(_ _)m まる さぁ、今週は日本の文化・風習から「写楽」についてです。 Here we go! =================================================================== + CULTURE "Sharaku" http://www.jpn-miyabi.com/Vol.29/sharaku.html Sharaku, who came into sudden prominence, painted a number of ukiyoe in a short period and suddenly disappeared. Owing to the scarcity of historical material and literature concerning Sharaku, this mysterious ukiyoe painter has been investigated by numerous scholars and intellectuals for a long time. Sharaku left 144 ukiyoe paintings, which were all painted in 10 months. It means that he painted one ukiyoe painting per two days. Even Utamaro Kitagawa who is one of the famous ukiyoe painters, took 10 years to paint 140 ukiyoe pictures. Sharaku's pace in which he produced the paintings was nothing short of miraculous. However, Sharaku's ukiyoe that portrayed actors with bold deformation were not evaluated highly among the actors of those days and were not in high demand. In 1910, Sharaku came into the light by the announcement of monograph written by a German scholar, Julius Kurth, who wrote very highly of Sharaku's work. Since then the research of Sharaku was reviewed more in detail in Japan. A headman of Kanda area in Edo (Tokyo) named Gesshin Saito wrote in his supplementary ukiyoe handbook that Sharaku was a noh actor named Jurobei Saito. However, as the research progressed, the existence itself of Jurobei Saito had become doubtful. A noh actor, usually of a samurai rank then, would have documents proving it's origin, the name of Jurobei Saito was not identified even in a directory. Therefore, numerous hypothesis and opinions have come out for a while who Sharaku is, such as an anonymous prominent ukiyoe painter, or a publisher Juzaburo Tsutaya, or Sharaku is the name of ukiyoe project produced by groups of ukiyoe painter, etc. However in recent years, the existence of Jurobei Saito was recognized in ancient documents that were discovered in Saitama, which coincide with the record of Sharaku in Edo era.
