In the case of pig, Japanese people say "Booboo" but Americans say "Oink". A lady wondered "Why do Americans hear 'Oink'?", where we only hear "Booboo" and thought she may hear pig's voice like an American if she went abroad to study English. As the result, she surely mastered English and now is giving kids some English lessons in Japan. What could be a better reason to start learning English or any other language? In my case, it goes back to my primary school days. One pretty American girl transferred to our school, she was lower-grade than me and so cute like a doll, and I had an urge to talk with her. At last, I decided to ask her to play with me. One day, I went to her house with my friend with Japanese English dictionary and we explained eagerly that we wanted to play with her next Sunday, but we could only repeat "Play!" and "Sunday" with gesture. She might have been overpowered by our enthusiastic invitation and nodded her head. I never forgot her uneasy face. :) By the way, here's a short list of some differences in description of animal cry. Dog English "Bow wow" Japanese "Wan wan" Horse English "Neigh" Japanese "Hihi---n" Goat English "Bleat" Japanese "Myeee---" Frog English "Croak" Japanese "Gero gero" What do you think? <Japanese> 動物の鳴き声の聞こえ方は国によってさまざま。日本では豚の鳴き声は 「ブーブー」ですが、英語では"Oink"（オインク）と言います。ブーブー が当たり前の私達にとって、そんな風には絶対に聞こえないのに何故？ と思ったある人は、英語の勉強をすれば豚の声も"Oink"と聞こえるの では･･･と思ったことが留学のきっかけになったそうです。頑張った 甲斐あって、英語もバッチリ習得、今では子供向けの英語教室の先生を しているそうです。皆さんは何をきっかけにもっと英語を勉強したいと 思いましたか？ 私の場合は小学生の頃、アメリカ人のとっても可愛い 下級生が転入してきて、お人形さんみたいな彼女と話をしてみたいと 思ったのが最初かな。友人と辞書を片手にその子の家に行き、「今度の 日曜日、一緒に遊ばない？」のつもりで、玄関先で"ぷれい!" "さんでー!"を身振り手振りで一生懸命に説明。私達の熱き想い？に 圧倒されたのか、不安げ首を縦にこっくりうなずいてくれた彼女の顔は 今でも忘れられません。（笑） さて、豚の鳴き声が出たついでに他の動物の鳴き声は英語で何と言うか ピックアップしてみましょう。 犬 日本語「ワンワン」 英語「Bowwow」【bauwau】 馬 「ヒヒーン」 「Neigh」 【nei】 ヤギ 「メー」 「Bleat」 【bli:t】 蛙 「ゲロゲロ」 「Croak」 【krouk】 いかがですか？ 聞こえますか？ では、今号は簡単英会話です。 =========================================================== + Conversation Lesson + http://www.jpn-miyabi.com/vol.25/conversation25.html Richard: Since autumn comes, why don't we go to hot-spring? Becky : Why not? I collected some brochures from travel agents, expecting just that. Richard: Great preparation! Becky : I heard that our neighbor would visit Kyoto next week, and I had this sudden urge to go somewhere so I got these pamphlets. Richard: Kyoto? I envy them. Becky : But I think we would need 5 days at least in Kyoto. This time, we have about three holidays. Right? Richard: Yes, it may be a short trip, so it's better not to travel too far. Becky : Look! This ryokan has a good outdoor Hot-spring. How pretty this garden is! Richard: I've never heard of this ryokan, but it may be a good bet. Becky : Do you know what? The hotel charge is different between weekdays and holidays. We have to pay extra 10,000 yen on holidays. Can you take a day off on weekdays? Richard: No problem. Becky : Richard, this one has a nice and spacious room. Richard: Yeah, let's keep it as an option. Becky : Shall we go to a travel agent in a day or two? Richard: We'd better pick up some ryokans and I'll call the agent. : : Becky : How was it? Richard: We're on the waiting list. Becky : Already?! Richard: Autumn is the best season for enjoying hot-spring and viewing tinted leaves. And...I want to eat eki-ben! Becky : Eki-ben aside, we have to look for ryokan first! ------------------------------------ <Japanese> Since autumn comes: この場合のsince は「〜だから、〜ゆえに」という 理由を表します。 「秋が来たから」 → [秋だし、」 hot-spring: 温泉 "spa"も温泉ですが、厳密には鉱泉の出る保養地や、 サウナなどを備えた保養所のようなところもspaと言います。 Why don't we 〜?: 「〜しませんか」「〜してはどうですか」と誘いや 提案をする場合に使われます。 "Why don't you 〜？"が相手に対して、「（あなたは） 〜してはどうですか？」と聞く場合に使うのに対し、 上記のようにRichard自身も含め、対象が「僕達（私達）」 になる場合は Why don't we 〜？になるわけですね。 Why not?: Why don't you〜？の提案に対し、同意を示します。 expecting just that: 「そんなこともあるかと思って」 Great preparation!: Great!だけでよく使います。 envy: ＋目 （人・ものを）うらやむ 「あなたが羨ましいわ」 → "I envy you!" + 目 +目 （人を〜のことで）うらやむ 「綺麗で羨ましいわ」 → "I envy you your beauty." outdoor hot-spring: 露天風呂 it may be a good bet: 「穴場かもしれない。」 bet（名）の意味は”賭け”。 Do you know what?: 「知ってる？」 take a day off: 休暇を取る 【例】今週は３日ほどお休みします。 → "I will take three days off this week." in a day or two: 一両日中に 【関連】２〜３日中に → in a few days in two or three days be on the waiting list: キャンセル待ちをする tint: 色をつける aside: （動）名詞の後に置いて、「〜は別として」「さておいて」 【和訳】 Richard: 秋だし、温泉にでも行こうか。 Becky : いいわね！ そんなこともあるかと思ってお薦め温泉の ガイドブック買っておいたのよ。 Richard: おっ、用意がいいね。 Becky : お隣さんが来週、京都だそうよ。 そんなこと聞いたら私もどこか行きたくなって買っちゃった。 Richard: 京都かぁ、うらやましいなぁ。 Becky : 京都だったら５日間はほしいわね。 今回は３日間ぐらいでしょ？ Richard: そうだね。近場がいいかな。 Becky : 見て、ここの旅館は露天風呂がいいのよ。 それに素敵なお庭だわ！ Richard: 聞いたことない旅館だけど、穴場かもしれないね。 Becky : 知ってた？ 平日と休日だと１万円も料金が違うわ。 平日、お休み取れる？ Richard: 大丈夫だよ。 Becky : こっちの旅館は部屋が広くていいわね。 Richard: ほんとだ。ここも候補に入れておこう。 Becky : 今日か明日にでも旅行会社に行ってみましょうか。 Richard: その前に幾つか選んで、電話で聞いてみよう。 ･ ・ ・ Becky : どうだった？ Richard: どれもキャンセル待ちだって。 Becky : もう？！ Richard: 秋は温泉と紅葉の両方が楽しめるからね。 駅弁も食べたいなぁ。 Becky : 駅弁より、先に宿を決めなくちゃダメよ！ =========================================================== Today's recommendable web magazine!
