I feel very happy. Why? Because we have two national holidays in this week. A friend of mine lives in USA often tells me enviously that there are more national holidays in Japan than in USA. However, I found several countries that have more national holidays than Japan. As for this year, New Zealand has 21 holidays and Sri Lanka has 26 holidays. Incidentally, we have 15 national holidays in Japan. Anyway, I'm confident that anyone who works on this planet should love national holidays whatever the day may be. In the meantime, there is a "Secretary Day" in April in US. In a precise sense, it is not a national holiday. Customary, bosses give cards and flowers to their secretaries and female subordinates or invite them to lunch or dinner on that day to show their appreciation for their services. On the contrary, secretaries and female subordinates give cards and flowers on a "Boss Day" in October. Both customs started to understand each other better. But please note that you can never send red roses on either day. Because the language of red rose means "Love". However, of course you can send red rose if you really need to. <Japanese> 皆さん、こんにちは。今週は２日も祝日があって嬉しいですね。 よく、アメリカにいる友人から日本は祝日が多くて羨ましいと言われ るのですが、日本よりももっと祝日の多い国があります。今年で見て みると、ニュージーランド２１日、スリランカにおいては２６日も あるそうです。因みに日本は１５日。 いずれにせよ、働く者にとって、心置きなく休める祝日は嬉しいもの ですよね。全国民がお休みとなる祝日とは少し異なりますが、アメリ カでは４月に「秘書の日」という記念日があります。上司が秘書や部 下に日頃の労をねぎらう意味で、花束やカード、お休みを贈ったり、 食事をご馳走したりします。反対に１０月には「ボスの日」があり、 部下が上司に感謝の意を込めて花束やカードを贈るのです。どちらの 記念日も相互理解を目的としたのが始まりだそうです。 但し、ひとつ注意。赤い薔薇を贈っていけません。なぜなら赤い薔薇 の花言葉は「愛情」だから。 でも、中には両方の意味を込めて贈りたい人もいるかもしれませんね〜。 さぁ、今週は日本の文化風習ですっ! =========================================================== *Japanese Culture "Superstitions" http://www.jpn-miyabi.com/Vol.26/meishin.html In Japan, like in any other country, we have lots of superstitions and proverbs that have been passed down from generation to generation from old times. Mostly, it seems that they have a certain religious background and based on daily life, and have been widely spread thereafter. In the following, I will try to introduce you some of unique superstitions and proverbs in Japan. Superstition -1. -------------------- "It is a sign of good luck to have a tea stalk floating straight up in your morning tea." This superstition originates from the sales promotion of a tea shop in Edo period to sell the lower grade tea. Even not knowing the origin, most Japanese feel happy if we find a floating tea stalk in the cup. Superstition -2. ------------------- "If you cut your nails in the night, you will not be able to see through your parents' death." It was described in Nihonshoki(chronicle Japan) that the soul lodges in our body. This superstition is based on the teaching of Confucianism, which said, to cut the part of body at night was the beginning of an undutiful son/daughter. Accordingly people of those days thought cutting the nail without lights was risky. Superstition -3. ------------------- "If you pull out your teeth, throw the lower teeth toward the sky and the upper teeth toward the ground." This is a charm rather than superstition. We make a wish that new lower teeth would grow to up straight and the new upper one to take root firmly. Proverb -1. -------------- "Laying down after a meal, one may become a cow." Today, most Japanese have a meal at the table in a western style, but basic Japanese style is to be set the table on the tatami mat and sit straight with bent knees. When a chair and sofa was not available in Japan, one would lay down on the tatami mat, and this was considered a bad behavior, as well as a symptom for kids who are abandoning study. This proverb is for home discipline. Proverb-2. ------------- In Japan, no. 4 and 9 are equivalent to No. 13 that is avoided as an unlucky number. The reason is the pronunciation of 4 equal to death and 9 is the same as suffering in Japanese. --------------------------- <Japanese> 「日本の迷信」 世界中の国々で様々な迷信やことわざがあるように、日本でも遥か遠い 昔から先祖代々伝承されているものが数多くあります。その多くは宗教 性が背景にあり、日常生活の中から生まれ実践されてきたようです。 ここでは幾つかの日本の迷信とことわざを紹介したいと思います。 迷信１．「朝のお茶に茶柱が立つと良いことがある」 江戸時代、お茶屋さんが売れ行きのよくない二番茶の販促として打ち 立てたことが始まりと言われています。この由来を知らずとも茶柱を 見つけると多くの人は何となく嬉しい気持ちになるようです。 迷信２．「夜、爪を切ると親の死に目に会えない」 そもそも日本書紀においては爪には霊魂が宿っていると考えられて いました。 この迷信は、江戸時代、「親からもらった身体の一部を 夜切るのは親不孝の始まり」とする儒教の教えに基づいていおり、 明かりがない時代、危ないという理由から言い伝えられてきたもの です。 迷信３．「下の歯が抜けたら空へ、上の歯が抜けたら縁の下に投げる」 こちらは迷信というよりもおまじないです。下の歯を上に投げるのは、 新しい歯も真っ直ぐ上に向かって伸びるように、上の歯はしっかり下に 根付くようにとの願いがこめられています。 ことわざ１．「食事の後にすぐに横になると牛になる」 今では椅子のあるテーブルで食事をする家庭も多くなりましたが、 もともと日本では畳の上にテーブルを置き、正座をして食事をする スタイルが一般的でした。 ソファーなどの椅子がない時代は畳の 上に横たわることになり、行儀が悪い、勉強をしなくなるという 理由からこのように言われるようになったようです。 ことわざ２． アメリカでは１３が不吉な数字としてあげられますが、日本では それに当たるのが４と９です。 ４は「死」、９は「苦」を意味 するとして避けられています。 superstition: 迷信 proverb: ことわざ pass down: 〜を〜に伝える from generation to generation: 代々 religious: 宗教的な、宗教上の thereafter: その後は、それ以来 unique: 独特の、唯一の、【口語】珍しい、目立つ、異常な stalk: 茎 a tea stalk → 茶柱 float: 浮く、浮かぶ originate from: （〜から）始まる origin: 起源、由来 sales promotion: 販売促進 even: 〜でさえも、〜ですら in the night: 夜中に see through: （〜を）最後まで見届ける describe: 記述する、描写する chronicle: 年代記、編年史 lodge: （精神が身体に）宿る Confucianism: 儒教 the Confucian classics 儒教の経典 at night: 夜に in the nightは「夜中に」 混同しないように注意です。 undutiful: dutiful（礼儀正しい、忠順な、従順な）に un をつけて 逆の意味で使います。 accordingly: [接続副詞的に用いて] よって、従って pull out: 抜歯する charm: おまじない、魔法 make a wish: 願い事をする take root: 根付く firmly: しっかりと、堅く sit straight: 正座する bend: 曲げる symptom: 兆候、兆し abandon: （計画・習慣などを途中で）やめる discipline: しつけ equivalent to + （代）名詞: 〜と等価値で、〜に相当して equal to: 〜と等しくて、相当しくて suffering: 苦痛、苦しみ 文中の"with bent knees（膝を曲げて）"で、ちょっと面白い話を 思い出しました。 (bentはbendの過去・過去分詞） それは友人のお母さんがその昔、海外で出産をした時のこと。 いよいよ出産という時にお医者様が「Bend your knees!（膝を曲げ て下さ-い）」と言ったのですが、初産で緊張していた？お母さん、 「ベンジョニー！」と聞こえて、慌てておトイレに行こうとしたと･･･。 皆さんも英語にまつわる面白い体験談などありましたら、教えて下さ〜い。 =========================================================== Today's recommendable web magazine!
