As far as Japan is concerned, I think a most familiar dialect is the Kansai accent. For those who were born in Tokyo, Kansai accent sounds like familiarity and funniness, which remind me of a famous comic dialog of Manzai, "Boke to Tsukkomi (Streight-man and funny-man)". I think it is not completely unrelated to the fact that Osaka has prospered as a city of merchants. As they often say "Sometimes the best gain is to lose", they consider customer's feeling by underestimating himself to create smooth communication. As a result of that, they will succeed in selling their commodity. It seems to me that the unique expression and intonation of the Kansai accent has something to do with such a cultural background. Well, this week, we are going to present Japanese conversation lesson. Mary: I let my hair grow long, so leave it at shoulder length in back. And take about two centimeters (an inch) off my bangs. Jack: I remember, you tired really short hair last time, didn't you? You tried changing your whole image. You look good in short hair, too, but did you get tired? Mary: Yes, thank you. My husband liked that. But I want to be my hair long because it's getting cold. Jack: OK. How about your hair color? Would you like to dye? Mary: No, thanks. I'll dye next time, but I'm thinking of a straight perm instead. Jack: Yes, Madam. Mary: Does my hair get damaged in a straight perm? Jack: Right, I think you should do treatment. Mary: Do you have any recommended treatment? Jack: Yes, we do. Our treatment is very popular with other customers. Would you like to try it? Mary: Yes, please. I'll buy one bottle later. 【和訳】 ＜美容院にて＞ Jack ：やぁ､メアリー！久しぶりだね。元気だった？ （美容師） Mary : こんにちは。ほんと、どれくらいぶりかしら。半年くらい？ Jack : 今日はどうする？ Mary : 今、髪を伸ばしているから肩までの長さで止めて（切って）ほしいの。 それと、前髪は２センチくらい切ってくれる？ Jack : そうだった、前回はベリーショートにしたんだよね。 思い切ってイメチェンしたんだったよね。 ショートもお似合ですよ。でも、飽きちゃった？ Mary : ええ、ありがとう。主人にも好評だったわ。 でも涼しくなってきたから、また伸ばそうと思って。 Jack : オッケー。色はどうする？ 染める？ Mary : 染めるのはこの次にするわ。その代わりストレートパーマを かけようと思って。 Jack : かしこまりました。 Mary : ストレートパーマって髪の毛痛むかしら？ Jack : そうだね、トリートメントはした方がいいよ。 Mary : お薦めのトリートメントある？ Jack : ありますよ、うちで使っているトリートメントは他のお客さんにも 好評なんだ。使ってみる？ Mary : ええ、あとで１本頂いていくわ。 ******************* Long time no see! : この「久しぶり」はカジュアルな表現です。 電話で「久しぶり」という時は Long time no talk! とか 最近はインターネットで日本人にもお馴染みになったchat（お喋り）を 使って Long time no chat! と言います。 How have you been? : 「元気だった？」 この他、"How's it been?"とか "What have you been up to?" などと言うことが出来ます。 How long has it been? : 「どれくらいぶりかしら？」 I let my hair grow long. : 「髪を伸ばしています。」 bangs : 前髪 get tired : 飽きる dye : （染料で）染める 髪の毛を黒く染める→ dye one's hair black a straight perm : ストレートパーマ instead : その代わりとして get damaged : ダメージを受ける→ （髪の毛が）痛む treatment : トリートメント 【おまけ】その他、美容院で使われる英語を用意してみました^0^ リンス： conditioner または rinse パーマをかける： get (have) a perm ドライヤー： a dryer, a hair dryer 刈り上げる： cut(trim) one's hair short くせ毛： wavy(curly) hair 白髪になる： （髪の毛を主語として）turn gray My hair is turning gray. 「白髪が増えてきました。」 カリスマ美容師： a charismatic hairstylist 「毛先を揃えてほしいんです。」： I'd like to get a trim. 「１０月１５日２時頃で、カットの予約を入れたいのですが。」： "I'd like to make an appointment for cut on October 15th around 2 p.m." 「私は髪の毛が多いんです。」： "My hair is too thick." 「ワンレンにして下さい。」： "Please make it all the same length." （雑誌や写真を指しながら）「 こういう髪型にして下さい。 」： "Cut my hair like this (picture), please." 〜 短期旅行ではちょっと難しいかもしれませんが、少し長く海外に滞在 される時など美容院に行ってみるのもイイかもしれません。シャンプー台 やシステムの違いに驚いたり、美容師さんとの会話で英会話の練習しちゃ ったり、楽しめると思いま-す。〜 =========================================================== Today's recommendable web-magazine!
