Christmas decorations and New Year's festivities are common sights in the winter in Japan. Today, we would like to introduce another winter feature called "Ishiyaki-imo-ya". "Ishiyaki-imo" means sweet potatoes roasted on hot pebbles. "Ishiyaki-imo-ya" is a vendor of "Ishiyaki-imo" who sells "Ishiyaki-imo" on the traveling stand. You can recognize them on the street by the sweet smell and unique street cries. Since sweet potatoes grow even in the wasteland, they helped people survive famine in the Edo era and during and after World War II. After the war, people who lost their shops started Ishiyaki-imo-ya for a living. That is thought to be a root of Ishiyaki-imo-ya. Though we have not many chances to see traveling stands other than ramen stands on the street, there are various kinds of mobile stands in Japan. A Tofu maker, an Ice lolly shop, a picture-story showman are some of them. For those who had spent a childhood with traveling stands, the sight of the moving stands reminds them of old and good days of Japan. By the way, a friend of mine who made a mixed marriage once told me that she and her husband speak their native language when they quarrel excitedly. This time I tried to pick some phrases up for such an occasion. Let’s speak out and repeat it to get ready for a pinch! Of course I hope you could not be put in such situation. <Japanese> 日本ではこれから寒い冬の季節に入ります。年末年始に向けての クリスマスの飾りやお正月の賑わいは冬の風物詩ですが、その他 にも日本の冬の風物詩として「石焼いも屋さん」が挙げられます。 お芋を焼きながら売り歩く移動屋台。 お芋の甘い匂いとともに 「石焼いも〜」という独特の節回しで売って歩く姿が特徴です。 サツマイモは荒れた土地でも育つことから、江戸時代の飢饉や 戦中戦後の食料難時代に人々の危機を救った食べものです。 石焼いも屋は、戦災で店舗を失った人々が生活のために始めた のがルーツだそう。現在はラーメン屋さんほど見かけなくなり ましたが、移動式屋台にはお豆腐屋さん、アイスキャンディー 屋さん、紙芝居屋さんなどもあります。 移動式屋台が日常に溢れていた時代を生きた人達にとっては、 古き良き日本の懐かしい姿でもあります。。 さて、国際結婚をした友人などから、喧嘩になるとお互い つい母国語が出てしまうという話を聞いたことがあります。 今回の会話レッスンはそんな時のため（？）に簡単な英語の フレーズをピックアップしてみました。ちょっと強引ですが･･･。 複数回音読していざという時にバシッと決めましょう。 なんて、そんなシチュエーションにならないことを祈ってます。 =========================================================== 　　　　　　　　　　　+ CONVERSATION + 　　　http://www.jpn-miyabi.com/Vol.27/conversation27.html Lucy: 　You said, "Let's stop seeing each other." 　　　　　What the hell are you talking about?
